"ESPRIT OF MORALE"

Something I wrote supposedly for the college mag. But I changed my mind so I just posted it here. I wanted to do a series. Hopefully, it'll push through here. =) This story, as I'd describe it, is like a simulation of college life particularly in the Philippines. It aims to connect with the Filipino youth. I'll incorporate as much "similar" or "common" Pinoy youth stories and situations as possible.

"ESPRIT OF MORALE"

It was a cold Thursday afternoon. After my first day in English class, I decided to get my I.D. and then pay for my P.E. uniform afterwards. The sky was gray and I felt the tiny drops drizzling from above. So I pulled my new jacket that I bought from the mall yesterday out of my backpack and started to make faster steps towards the gym. The drizzle became heavier so I had to run. Good thing, I was nearing the gym’s gate.

When I got there, I kept my jacket back in my bag again ‘cause its too warm inside to wear it. The queues were long and I noticed that people in it were already irritable because of the slow moving lines. I fell in line in one of those queues, and being the typical guy-next-door that I am, I have no problem with waiting in lines, unless I’m in a hurry, of course. As I was standing there, I can’t help but notice the people around me. “There must be more than a thousand students in here”, I said to myself. Different personalities, different beliefs, different perspectives and outlooks in life, all in this great adventure called college - where no one knows where you’d really go, what would happen after one, two, to four years being in this ride.

“Excuse me? Nakapila ka?” said a girl behind me. Startled by her voice, I snapped out of it and noticed that the line has already moved and I was already far from the guy in front so I hurriedly stepped forward as I felt a little blush on my face.

“Yeah! Done paying. Now I can roam around the campus a bit” I whispered to myself. As I stepped through a crowd, at the periphery of my vision, I saw this girl. She just caught my eyes. She has this long, natural dark brown-colored hair, a fair, ivory-toned complexion, almond eyes or “chinita” as they'd describe it, wearing a simple pink shirt with a shout-out saying “don’t stare!”, tight jeans and a pair of black and pink Chuck Taylor’s sneakers, gracefully walking with two other girls towards the exit.

“Lee! Anjan ka lang pala!” says a familiar voice from behind. “Huy!” says another blow. As I turned around, I saw my classmate and a new friend. “Uy Marvin, ikaw pala” I said in a bit startled modulation, “oh bakit? Tapos ka nang magbayad for the uniform? Haba ng pila noh?” trying to carry a conversation with him. But while he was talking, my head kept on twisting, hoping to see that girl again.
